Contest: Name that Cardigan

I know that many of you are anxiously awaiting the release of Whisper 2.0.  The sample has been knit, and my tech editor is currently sizing it.  So very soon, my friends, very soon.

While we wait, let’s have some fun!  Whisper is such a perfect name for this cardigan.  However, that is the name of the Interweave Knits version.  Moving forward, this new and improved version must bear a different name.  I have been trying to think up something spectacular for weeks now, and I’ve got nothing.  So hey, y’all are smart.  What do you think?  I will pick my favorite and send the “winner” a skein of Malabrigo Sock Yarn in my favorite color, Chocolate Amargo.  We’ve got a week or two, so don’t feel like you have to rush.  Think on it and then comment below.  Thanks!

    Hushed.

  2. Whistlepea Says:

    Sigh?

  3. Chantal B Says:

    Murmure (whisper in french)
    Caresse
    Effleure

I speak french, sorry, all nice words come to me in french! Hope that I have a chance to win anyway! ha ha ha!!! I do it just for fun, and because I like your work. Nice week-end!

  4. Brinn Says:

Ooh, ooh, how about Hush? To go with Whisper? (if you don’t use it, I’ll probably knit something myself and call it that). : )

  5. Robin Says:

    Caress; Soupcon; Shadow; or Breath

  6. helena Says:

‘telephone’ — because of the game when you whisper into your neighbor’s ear, and subtle (or perhaps not-so-subtle) variations on the original are formed, and the end result is generally delightful.

  7. Ilana Hopwood Says:

I’ll name it breeze, which is an onshore afternoon wind, caused by warm air rising over the land in sunny weather. perfect for this pretty airy cardi.

    Ilana

  8. stacey Says:

    “Trace” or “Breath”.

  9. Julie Says:

How about gossip. It’s sometimes what we whisper about and I’m sure this sweater is what people will be talking about. Can’t wait to see it!

  10. Kelly Says:

    Aire

  11. Liz S. Says:

    Souffle is murmur(noun) in french
Wisp is also close to the alternate meaning of Whisper
Susurrus also means whisper (alt. susurrant, susurrous)

  12. Melody Netzer Says:

I was going to suggest either hush or breeze but as both those have been suggested how about murmur or humming.

  13. Robinznest Says:

Mist. I think that sounds light and airy – like something soft settling on your shoulders in the early morning.

  14. Theresa P. Says:

    How about Whiff or Innuendo.

  15. Robinznest Says:

I just realized there is another sweater pattern called Mist, so perhaps Morning Mist would be a better choice.

  16. Georgia Monk Says:

Seashell or “Shelly.” It’s a beautiful garment with natural, elegant lines.

  17. Aline Says:

While I love my first Whisper made with my homespun yarn and I called that one Whispering about Bliss on Ravelry…you are welcome to use the same name if you think it’s as cool as I do!!

  18. Marianne Says:

So, if you are going to “whisper” it is probably a “secret”. Though I do like the previous commentors version: murmure

  19. Judy Says:

Would ‘wispy’ be too close to ‘whisper’? It certainly is a wispy design.

  20. Barbie Says:

    Susurration
    Sibilation

  21. browncurls Says:

I think Wisp Cardi would be the perfect name – close but not the same as Whisper!

  22. teacosy Says:

suspense… it just goes well with whisper, without being too obviously the same…

  23. Cheeri Says:

Shimmer. Though I do like Wisp, as others have suggested…like a bunch of wispy clouds in the sky.

  24. Sadie Says:

How about Zephyr, like a tiny breeze?

  25. Sharon G. Says:

I have two ideas…Bay Mist and Evangeline. The sweater reminds me of something I would have worn on a trip out in Casco Bay, and Bay Mist is the name of one of the ferry boats. The sweater is also light and airy like the mist. Evangeline is a tribute to Longfellow and one of his famous poems. Sorry for the two Portland references…can you tell I miss home??

  26. Shelly Says:

Although, I love Georgia’s idea to call it “Shelly”, my idea is from the Old English for whisper, Hwisprian. Whatever you name it, I can’t wait to see it!

  27. penny dubois Says:

How about: Bijou, it is french for Jewel!

  28. carolyn Says:

Made of the Mist (like the Maid of the Mist boat on Niagara Falls, where a Whisper cardi is a perfect layer to have in the summertime)
Whispy (or Wispy if you like correct spellings)

  29. Maryse Says:

I love finding names! I suggest “Wink”! The word itself is close to “Whisper”. How about a wink after a whisper ;-) But there are a lot of great names already. It will be hard for you to choose!

  30. Ann Says:

I think the offspring of Whisper should be Rustle – a soft muffled sound !

  31. Melinda Says:

I like the name Breeze – because it’s the sort of cardigan you would wear when there is a warm breeze blowing. I hope that there is still a warm breeze blowing here in New Zealand when that pattern becomes available – not an icy, bone-chilling wintery blast! I have my yarn and I’m DESPERATE to start knitting my beautiful cardigan.

  32. Nancy Says:

    Shhhhh

  33. Ridgely Says:

    cloud 9

  34. Paula Durrant Says:

    Softly …

  35. Meg Says:

    I like Hush or Murmer.

    Can’t wait to see it!!

  36. Melissa Says:

Sweet Nothing..as in Whispering sweet nothings..

  37. lorraine Says:

I would like to suggest the name Zephyr. When we are out sailing we refer to a gentle breeze as a zephyr. Also it could mean soft, light fabric. I have knit the original sweater and it is all of these things. I loved knitting it and like wearing it very much.

  38. Ühltje Says:

Radicchio, but I can’t give you a good reason.

  39. britt Says:

    breathe.

  40. Ana Huron Says:

    Hi Hannah,
    “Paragon” – model of excellence

  41. Anne Lindenfeld Says:

    How about “Chit Chat”?

  42. niki Says:

serendipity… when i saw it, i knew it was meant to be

  43. Lori in Michigan Says:

    “Fresh”

  44. Ana Huron Says:

“Swan Cardi” (as in ‘unique’; not ‘ducky’)

  45. Sheila Says:

    sotto voce
    sigh
    wind
    shared whispers
    whipporwill
    murmur

  46. Rachel Says:

    How about “Flutter”?

  47. Christina Says:

I was going to suggest zephyr but I see someone beat me to it. So I second the name instead. However, susurrus is a vastly underused synonym of whisper. So underused, it isn’t even in spell check.

  48. Julie Says:

I love “dream cardi” or the “grace cardi”. . . beautiful, classy and graceful!

  49. olga Says:

Rumour (or is in Rumor in American English?)

  50. Teresa Nascimento Says:

    “Maresia”
I’m portuguese, so this a portuguese name, but I like it a lote.

  51. Linda Butkus Says:

Awww, I liked Hush, Murmur, and Zephyr too

    How about:
    Abrazo (hug in Spanish)
    Comfort
    Careless
    Touch
    Mute

    Embrace

  52. Lora Says:

    How about whistle.

  53. Patricia Says:

I like “Winsome”. Doesn’t have anything to do with whispers or gossip or breaths or breezes. I just wanted to throw out a “w” name — plus I like what it means. 1 : generally pleasing and engaging often because of a childlike charm and innocence
2 : cheerful, lighthearted. Good luck finding a name either way!

  54. KathyR Says:

    Chinook. Gossamer. Kissed or Kiss.

  55. Muffin Says:

    The name should be “Hannah”.

  56. Liz Says:

Willow. Or Fairy Dust. Can’t wait to see it!

  57. Ana Huron Says:

    “Kiss”
    “First Kiss”

  58. Youngsook Says:

    How about Whisper”s Friend.

  59. Youngsook Says:

    How about whisper@ friend?

  60. Annegret Says:

How about “Little Dream”? A lightweight little cardigan, just a pull-over.
    Or, how about “Summer Wind”?

    Annegret

  61. Ana Huron Says:

OK…I’ve got to stop a-ready!! This contest is killing me!
“Dandelion” – as in spring wind blowing the hair of my sweet 3 year-old as he blows dandelion pods.
I’m done, done, done! Lord, be with Hannah as she decides….

  62. Stacey Armstrong Says:

    Whisper to a Scream
title of an 80s song from the Icicle Works (ok I had to look the band up), I can sing part of it though.

  63. Greeley Says:

    Ghibli
    Calliope
    Ibis

  64. katt Says:

    Breezy, maybe?

    Captivated

  66. mrspao Says:

    Hint

  67. Tara Says:

I like viska , it means whisper in swedish

  68. alice Says:

I keep coming back to your blog in anticipation, hoping to find the new version to be up. i’ve been thinking that perhaps you should name the new 2.0 version: Subtle.

For the simple reason that a whisper is louder than a shout, and i think the design is so popular because of the simplicity and elegance that comes through in the way it is constructed. It’s not a ‘loud’ in your face design, but is just, ahhh, lovely. can’t wait til it’s up! i need some simple knitting to get me away from uni finals! xx

  69. jen howe Says:

I’m currently knitting Whisper and loving it — so light and breezy — so why not call your next cardi ” Zephyr” — as in the lightest of breezes

  70. Rachel Says:

How about “Susurrus” – a soft murmur or rustle. I immediately thought of this word because I recently just re-read Terry Pratchett’s _The Wee Free Men_, which features this passage:

“Susurrus . . . according to her grandmother’s dictionary, it meant ‘a low soft sound, as of whispering or muttering’. Tiffany liked the taste of the word. It made her think of mysterious people in long cloaks whispering important secrets behind a door: susurrususssurrusss . . . “
