Knitting with Linen

I have worked with linen and other plant fiber based yarns in the past.  With my collection in Sparrow I had the chance to really explore what it can do.  Now that I've experienced it more fully I can't believe I didn't connect with it sooner.  I mean, Featherweight in linen would be the perfect little sweater for spring and summer!

I love knit fabric that drapes.  I typically achieve this with wool by knitting at a looser gauge.  Most of my loose gauge garments knit fingering or lace weight yarns at 6 sts to the inch.  A few of the especially drapey pieces in Knitbot Linen are at this gauge.   After much swatching I found closer to 7 sts to the inch, 6.75 to be exact, was the sweet spot with this fingering weight linen yarn.  If you prefer to substitute wool you'll still be able to achieve this gauge - just be sure to knit your gauge swatch, knitters!

Knitbot Linen features six unstructured knits, all meant to be breezy pieces to pair with your summer wardrobe.  Each piece has their own points of interest.  Here are some teasers of two of my favorites.

Until next week, when we'll kick of on Monday with a full preview.  You can look forward to the release mid week, giveaways, all kinds of excitement!

How is everyone feeling about knitting with linen?

Summer's coming...and so is Knitbot Linen

My new collection, which releases next week, features six unstructured knits all in Quince & Co. Sparrow.  The book will include my notes and tips on working with linen yarn.  I'll also be writing here on my blog about finishing, along with wash and care of your linen garments.

More details on the designs very soon...if you're a fan of my signature work, well, I think you'll be excited about the new patterns!

on location

We had a great time shooting my new collection on Saturday.  I can't wait to share more details with all of you about the pieces!

Preparations

Tomorrow we head to The Black Point Inn to photograph my new collection.  I'm looking forward to a lovely day with Pam, Carrie, Jerusha and Abigail, some fresh knits, a great wardrobe, delicious snacks and salty sea air.

And yes, I'm still knitting one of the pieces.  It will be done in time, don't you worry.

What's next

It's been challenging for me to find the time to write in this space since the release of June's Favorite Cardigan.  That's because I've been hard at work on a new collection, one that I believe is worth getting excited about.

You all are familiar with this:

COVER_essentials.hi.jpg

I am constantly amazed and grateful that Featherweight Cardigan essentially lives in the Ravelry top 20.  It tells me that their are constantly new knitters coming onto the scene discovering my signature top down cardigan pattern.

Knitbot Essentials was my first collaboration with my friends at Quince & Co. The book continues to be well received by knitters and local yarn shops everywhere.

SO, the short version of the story is: we've decided to collaborate on another book.  Abigail, pictured above, is flying in from Washington DC.  We're heading back to the Black Point Inn.  We've ordered some fabulous outfits for styling.  And the most exciting part: there are five NEW designs.   If you like Featherweight, well, I like to think you're going to LOVE what we'll have for you in a few short months.

So if you've been wondering what I'm up to, there you have it.  I'll pop into this space when I get the chance and show of bits and pieces!

Until next time...
