I will pull part of the answer to this question from the community. Tayna, aka Yarnosaurus , has the first completed Effortless Cardigan posted on Ravelry. Wow, she's fast! She knit hers using madelinetosh 80/10/10 MCN. You can read about her experience here.
She has the following suggestions for alternate yarns:
Some yarns I’d recommend would be Tosh Merino DK, Tosh DK, Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool, Berroco Ultra Alpaca, Blue Sky Alpaca, Tosh Merino/Bamboo, Tosh Pashmina, Tosh Merino Light (doubled), Isager Alpaca (doubled), Rowan Felted Tweed, among many others!
